Shortly after emerging from the building that housed Boregal in Embered Peaks, a Signal Bird arrived carrying a message from Darvin (narrowly missing Edge). The Signal Bird told Edge that the man who had previously asked her about the Jagged Dream had passed through town again, heading to the Gaze. Benedict captured the Signal Bird and kept it. The party decided to travel to the Gaze together for various reasons.
While sleeping along the Wandering Walk during Crankshaft’s watch, the party was ambushed by a Zaelem. Edge and Benedict narrowly avoided being eaten. Heading into a more forested area, the party came across a group of people who had been captured in a metal canister numenera trap. They asked for the party’s help in finding the device that would open the canister, and the party agreed to do what they could. Benedict quickly spotted a Yovok and chased it, however he accidentally triggered another one of the canister traps and had to dive out of the way to avoid being trapped, letting the yovok escape.
The party inspected the canister and discovered a power cell which they unplugged and left. Benedict tracked the yovok to where it has been mauled to death, and then followed the trail of blood to a Ravager Bear den, finding two cubs. The party was quickly attacked by the ravager bear mother, which they defeated, suffering a few injuries. Benedict used a mind calming cypher on one of the cubs and secured it with a leash. Crankshaft tried to calm the other one which ran away.
Not finding anything helpful, the party returned to the people trapped in the canister and were told that they had been attacked by the ravager bear earlier and had left one of their companions wounded to rest. The party tracked down the wounded man and were told that he had seen a group of yovoks heading to the east, carrying an assortment of interesting looking things. Crankshaft and Edge brought the man to his fellows while Benedict perused the yovoks.
The party found the yovoks placing their belongings as offerings in front of a large numenera device. They fought the yovoks, killing most of them and sending the rest running, and then inspected the device. Initial assessments found nothing but the fact that the device was without power, but could take the power cell they found at the second canister. In addition, there was a component of the device that seemed to fit the panel on the canister traps. So, they retrieved the cell and Crankshaft activated the device.
Crankshaft was transported into the device and the yovok that had run off returned, which Edge and Benedict dealt with. Crankshaft returned with a large cybernetic eye in place of his broken mutated eye. He then tried to remove the component again and succeeded. The party returned to the group in the canister, freed them, and were rewarded with some shins.
The party continued towards the Gaze, and as they approached the Great Slab they noticed that someone had constructed a scaffolding up the side of it, almost to the top. They investigated and discovered that a group from Norou were trying to explore the top of the Great Slab, which hadn’t been done before. Lemsel, the leader of the group, revealed that they had been hearing worrying noises from the top of the Great Slab (multi-instrument music, thudding footsteps, bloodcurdling screams). Lemsel hired the party as protection for exploring the slab, saying he would split the loot with them and the party agreed. Edge asked about the Jagged Dream and was told about a man that had asked the same questions on his way by, he was described as looking like an older version of McFarley.
That morning they ascended the stairs. Benedict was carrying his ravager bear cub in his backpack when the stomping noise startled it to jump onto Edge. Edge fell from the ladder and threw a rope up hoping to catch it, which Crankshaft did. Benedict retrieved his cub and Edge swung back to the safety of the ladder. Upon reaching the top of the stairs, one of the crewmen finished it, building the rickety-est step imaginable. Crankshaft was the first up, helping all of those being him.
