NEEDS TO BE LINKED
While Benedict, Eth and Jared did something else, Crankshaft and Edge visited the defacto leader of Shallamas, Argust Provani, to tell him about the list of names they found at Seskii Pit and find out if he knew anything about the Jagged Dream. Their suspicions that the names were Shadowling agents was confirmed and Argust asked the Party to help him discover who had released these identities to criminal groups. Argust suspected that the names were leaked by some of the Shadowling’s administrative staff and he gave them the names of the only three people who had access to the roster.
The Party headed to the Shadowling’s office and spoke to Osin and Tyrial, Kaiman was at the central market. They learnt that of the three names left on the list they found, only one remained alive. Osin told them that they could find the agent Boulice Semay working undercover at Echo Chamber, a bar where a group known as Reverberations was based. As they left, they were warned by Tyrial not to bug the third suspect, Kaiman Amakon, because he was having a tough week.
While Edge attended Echo Chamber as a patron, and enjoyed a beverage that caused sonic hallucinations, Crankshaft sneaked around the building. Crankshaft discovered that someone was intercepting and editing echoes, using some numenera devices and detailed sets and costumes. Notably, he took some realistic rubber masks and the a camera device used to make edits to echos. After leaving the bar, the Party viewed the echo stored in the device and saw two cloaked figures whispering to each other on a rooftop at night. Edge recognized the rooftop and they went to check it out. Viewing the echo again on the rooftop, they were able to hear one of the figures listing the names from the Shadowling roster.
Crankshaft returned to Echo Chamber and asked the bartender if he could see Boulice (using the alias from the roster). He was directed into the basement where he met Boulice. After persuading Boulice that his life was in danger, the agent agreed to meet him on the rooftop in the evening.
The Party then decided to look for the third suspect, Kaiman Amakon. Crankshaft sent Jo to fly around the market repeating that Kaiman Amakon should meet them outside the city gates. Unsurprisingly, Kaiman didn’t show up however his son Chip did. Crankshaft quickly scared the boy who ran and Edge followed him to his house. Crankshaft and Edge then independently went to meet Boulice. There they told Boulice what they had knew, as well as stressed that his life was in danger and he should be careful. Boulice reiterated that none of the undercover agents knew each other’s identities, and that if someone was leaking names it had to be one of the three administrative agents.
Leaving Boulice, the Party went to the Amakon house and talked to the three members of the family. From Kaiman’s wife Kell, they learned that Kaiman had been acting a little distance recently and had been talking in his sleep. From Chip, they learned that he had been attacked on the street by a group of thugs with the intent of influencing Kaiman. Finally, talking to Kaiman, they quickly received a confession from the guilt stricken man. Kaiman had been approached by the Jagged Dream (gasp!) and coerced through threats against his family into leaking the names. Crankshaft told him that if he helped them catch his Jagged Dream contact, then Crankshaft would help protect him from punishment for his crimes. They decided on a plan to ambush the Jagged Dream during another meet-up scheduled in two days at the rooftop.
Looking for backup, the Party told Boulice what they discovered about Kaiman. Boulice agreed to help them, and through coercion Crankshaft convinced him not to go to his superiors and incriminate Kaiman. Crankshaft visited Agrust Provani the next day and told him that the mole was either Kaiman or someone trying to frame Kaiman. Argust told Crankshaft to proceed with his plan, but warned that there would be dire consequences for whoever they determined was responsible.
The night of the meetup, Crankshaft and Edge used their powers to hide on the rooftop while Boulice and Jo waited on the ground. Kaiman and the Jagged Dream agent arrived, and then the agent was quickly spooked and ran. After a chase where the agent used various toxins and poisons against the Party, Edge managed to disable the agent at street level. Before they were able to knock him out, the agent drank a powerful poison, killing himself. Crankshaft tried to bring him back to life, but was unable to do so. Searching the man’s cloak, the Party found a synth-rod key, an enciphered letter with the Jagged Dream seal and a receipt for various plant materials.
